Cevizli, Maltepe

Cevizli is a mixed fabric on Maltepe's E-5 frontage, dense with markets, butchers, bakeries and restaurants. In these businesses the illuminated sign circuit is often wired in parallel with the interior lighting; when an LED module inside the sign takes in water and leaks to earth, the whole shop loses power and the refrigeration cabinets stop. In summer that outage means serious stock loss within hours and the business closes during service.

In the commercial board, refrigeration, signage and general lighting are split onto three separate legs, each with its own 30 mA residual current device, so a sign fault no longer stops the cabinets. The sign feed is upgraded to UV-resistant cable with IP66 junction boxes, and a phase protection relay added to the cabinet circuits. For sensitive registers and card terminals a Type 1+2 surge arrester is fitted in the board, protecting against utility switching spikes.

In Cevizli, a deformed socket plate, crackling from inside the box or a sharp plastic odour is a definite sign the terminal has begun to melt, and that outlet must be taken out of service immediately. The cause is almost always a loose screw connection: current crossing the contact resistance carbonises the copper, resistance climbs further and the terminal passes 200 degrees, melting the cable insulation. A FLIR thermal sweep finds the point without opening the wall.

The repair cuts blackened conductor ends back to clean copper, replaces the back-box and closes junctions with Wago 221 lever terminals rather than twists or tape. At heavy points such as a kitchen counter, an unbroken TSE-certified 3x2.5 mm² solid copper cable is pulled from the board and each major appliance given its own breaker. All screw connections are tightened with a calibrated screwdriver to between 2.5 and 3.5 Nm; hand tightening leaves an invisible slackness and the fault returns at the same point.

In Cevizli buildings without a protective earth it is common to find the neutral pin bridged to the earth terminal inside the socket. With that arrangement, the moment the upstream neutral loosens, 220 V phase potential energises the washing machine, dishwasher and oven chassis, and anyone touching the steel sink and the appliance together is placed across the mains. Diagnosis is simple: the voltage between neutral and earth is measured at the outlet, and anything above a few volts points to a jumper.

Where the building has a common earth, a 16 mm² protective conductor is pulled from the flat board to the main board; otherwise a solid copper electrode is driven into the garden or basement floor. Resistance is measured with a digital earth tester and, if the 2 Ohm target is missed, an extra rod is driven or bentonite backfill applied. Each socket is then opened and every jumper removed, and chassis continuity on metal-bodied appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers is measured to confirm they are genuinely bonded to the protective conductor.
