Aydıntepe, Tuzla

Aydıntepe faces Tuzla's Marmara shore and feels the effect of salt humidity on wiring constantly. In outdoor boards and garden junction boxes, a loose cable gland lets moisture travel straight down to the NYY cable end and oxide forms on the conductor surface; that oxide raises contact resistance and starts heating while lowering insulation resistance and creating leakage current. The exterior lighting device tripping repeatedly in wet weather is the visible result of that chain.

Glands are tightened with renewed seals, oxidised conductor ends cut back to clean copper and a protective conductive compound applied. The outdoor board is upgraded to a gasketed IP65 body with an anti-condensation resistive heater inside. On seafront elevations, stainless steel or polycarbonate bodies are preferred over aluminium for luminaires with fixings in A4 grade stainless, and the exterior circuit is given its own 30 mA device so indoor circuits are no longer affected.

In the older stock of Aydıntepe a ceramic screw-in fuse board still sits in the hall cupboard. These boards contain no residual current device at all, so protection against electric shock is zero; the fuse melts and welds into its base under overload, fails to clear a short circuit and the body carbonises over time. The sockets usually have no earth either, with the neutral pin bridged to the earth terminal.

The old board is removed entirely and a flame-retardant modular DIN-rail enclosure installed: an independent Type C breaker per room, dedicated circuits for kitchen and bathroom, and a 30 mA Type A residual current device plus a Type 2 surge arrester at the intake. Flat sub-boards use a minimum 6kA breaking capacity and building intakes 10kA. Where the building has a common earth, a 16 mm² protective conductor is pulled from the flat board to the main board; otherwise a solid copper electrode is driven into the garden or basement floor. Resistance is measured with a digital earth tester and, if the 2 Ohm target is missed, an extra rod is driven or bentonite backfill applied. Each socket is then opened and every jumper removed, and chassis continuity on metal-bodied appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers is measured to confirm they are genuinely bonded to the protective conductor.
