In the forty to fifty year old apartment blocks of Moda, Osmanağa and Rasimpaşa, cloth or lead insulated copper conductors still run inside concealed steel Bergman conduits. The insulation grows brittle and cracks over time, two cores touch and arcing starts inside the junction box. A crackling sound from the wall and a faint burnt odour are the first signs of that arc, and because it is invisible it is usually noticed late.

The circuit is measured with a 500 V megohmmeter; where insulation resistance is below 1 Megaohm the cable is not patched but pulled anew through the existing conduit route with Low-Smoke Zero-Halogen fire-resistant cable. All junctions are closed with Wago 221 lever terminals and every old twisted or taped splice is removed.

In the older buildings of Feneryolu, Göztepe and Erenköy no protective earth was ever installed, so the neutral pin has been bridged to the earth terminal inside the sockets. With that arrangement, the moment the upstream neutral loosens, 220 V phase potential energises the washing machine, dishwasher and oven chassis. Anyone touching the steel sink and the appliance at the same time is placed directly across the mains, and that shock is a lethal risk rather than a mild tingle.

The repair opens each socket in turn and removes every jumper, then confirms none remain by measuring the voltage between neutral and earth. A solid copper earth electrode is driven for the building, an earth busbar added to the main board, a 16 mm² protective conductor pulled and a 30 mA Type A residual current device fitted in the flat board.

The wide terrace and balcony sockets of flats along the Caddebostan, Suadiye and Fenerbahçe shoreline face salt-laden wind off the sea. Salt forms a green corrosion layer on the brass contacts inside the outlet, contact resistance rises and the residual current device trips repeatedly, especially in wet weather. The corrosion sits under the cover plate and goes unnoticed on casual inspection.

Corroded mechanisms are removed and replaced with silicone-gasketed IP65 marine grade sockets and luminaires. Ceiling and wall junction boxes are dried and encapsulated with dielectric silicone gel, and the terrace lighting circuit is placed behind its own 30 mA device so indoor circuits are no longer affected.

In the large living rooms of Bostancı and Kozyatağı, crystal and architectural luminaires weighing twenty to fifty kilograms are often hung from an old plaster plug or the junction box hook in the ceiling. Even if that fixing carries the static load it loosens under vibration and the fitting risks falling. Before installation the ceiling structure is checked and a heavy-duty steel expansion anchor set into structural concrete.

LED spot drivers and dimmer modules buried in unventilated suspended ceiling voids overheat, burn out and give off a scorched odour. Those modules are relocated to an accessible ventilated recess or beside the board, swapped for original surge-protected drivers, and a Type 2 arrester is added to the lighting circuit.

In the cafes and restaurants of Kadıköy Çarşı, Moda Caddesi and Caferağa, an industrial espresso machine, a convection oven and the VRF outdoor unit are frequently wired onto the same phase. At peak evening trade that phase reaches seventy amperes while the other two sit at twenty; the main breaker trips thermally and the business loses power during service.

Loads are distributed symmetrically across the three phases according to clamp meter readings, with kitchen equipment and air conditioning placed on separate legs. For sensitive audio, cash registers and card terminals a Type 1+2 surge arrester is fitted in the board, protecting against utility switching spikes.

In the terraced apartment blocks of Acıbadem and Rasimpaşa a residual current device refusing to reset at midnight is a frequent callout. Walls in these buildings are thin and neighbouring flats very close, so using a drill or breaker after 22:00 is simply not possible. The technician separates branches one by one at the board, measures each with a megohmmeter, isolates the faulty leg and brings the rest of the home back within the first ten minutes.

If the concealed run is permanently broken, a temporary safe line is installed overnight in fire-retardant surface trunking to power the refrigerator, boiler and lighting. The noisy permanent chasing work is booked for the next working day and confirmed to the customer in writing.

At the end of every job the circuit is measured with a 500 V megohmmeter; if phase-to-earth insulation resistance falls below 1 Megaohm the cable is pulled anew rather than patched. Earth loop impedance is measured at socket outlets to prove the protective device clears a fault inside TS IEC 60364 disconnection limits. During testing phase, neutral and earth are read separately, and any voltage between neutral and earth triggers a search for a bootleg ground jumper.

Earth electrode resistance is measured with a digital earth tester; when the 2 Ohm target is missed an additional rod is driven or bentonite backfill applied. Every recorded value is written numerically onto the service report, handed to the customer and kept on file, so readings can be compared at the next inspection.

If a sharp Bakelite odour or smoke comes from the board and it is not yet in flames, trip the main switch using a dry wooden handle. Never pour water onto switchgear or a burning cable; water conducts, intensifies the arc flash and electrocutes the person intervening. Use only a Class ABC dry chemical powder or carbon dioxide extinguisher.

Never grab an electrocuted person bare-handed; the current passes into the rescuer too and leaves two people across the circuit. Separate the casualty from the source with a dry broom handle, a leather belt or a wooden chair, call the emergency ambulance number, then alert our 24/7 emergency electrician line. Even if the casualty is conscious and says they feel fine they must still attend hospital, because current that has crossed the torso can produce a cardiac rhythm disturbance hours later. Once power is off the board cover is closed and nobody attempts to reset the lever until the electrician arrives.

In a forty-five year old flat in Moda, a resident touching the dishwasher and the steel sink at the same time received a severe electric shock. Reaching the address in nineteen minutes, our crew measured 218 V between the sink and earth with a Fluke multimeter. Investigation showed the neutral pin bridged to the earth terminal in the kitchen socket and the neutral connection inside the junction box broken. The dangerous jumper was removed, a solid copper earth electrode driven for the building, an earth busbar and 16 mm² protective conductor installed, and a Schneider 30 mA Type A residual current device commissioned. The final measurement read zero volts between sink and earth.

At the end of the callout line insulation resistance was re-measured with a megohmmeter, the values entered on the technical service report and a copy left with the customer. Fitted components carry both the manufacturer warranty and our 1 year labour guarantee.

In a Suadiye flat on a hot summer day, switching on four air conditioners together tripped the main breaker instantly and the lever would not hold. Arriving in twenty-four minutes, our crew measured a thirty-eight ampere inrush with a clamp meter, found the existing C20 breaker thermally locked out and the air conditioners fed from a socket circuit. An unbroken 3x4 mm² HES solid copper cable was pulled from the board to the outdoor unit group, and a Siemens C32 10kA motor characteristic breaker with a harmonic-immune Type F residual current device installed. All four units were run together and the system handed over under load.

Following the repair every board terminal was rechecked with a calibrated torque screwdriver, phase load distribution balanced with a clamp meter and the measurement report handed to the customer.
